After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Baltimore sent 44 teen athletes to compete in the 2022 JCC Maccabi Games in San Diego. Also in attendance at the games, which were held July 31 to Aug. 5, were seven coaches and one delegation head from the Baltimore area. In total, more than 1,500 participants from around the world, ranging in age from 12 to 16, participated in the games, which featured such team sports as basketball, baseball, ice hockey, soccer, volleyball and flag football. Two sisters died in a fire Aug. 3 while sleeping in their family’s summer rental home in Southampton, New York. Potomac residents Jillian Rose and Lindsay Eliza Wiener, 21 and 19, were with their family when the house caught fire shortly before 4 a.m. Jillian and Lindsay Wiener (Facebook) Five different volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze. Police and the fire marshal and arson squad all responded to investigate. A cause for the fire has not yet been released by investigators. The 11-year veteran ran the Enes Kanter Freedom Unity Basketball Camp at the Jerusalem YMCA through last Friday, Aug. 5. The clinic was open to 40 Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Druze children ranging in age from 10 to 15. For years, children with disabilities and their families have relied on the Jewish Community Center of Greater Baltimore to provide inclusive day camp experiences — first at Camp Milldale, which closed in 2015, and then at J Camps at the Owings Mills JCC. In June, J Camps became one of 15 day and overnight camps from around the country to be awarded a grant aimed at increasing the camp’s accessibility for children and staff with disabilities. Reisterstown resident Ella Galperin Zagranichny died on the night of Wednesday, July 27, after her 2019 Nissan Rogue plunged into Delight Quarry Lake, in the 600 block of Quarry View Court in Reisterstown. She was 71. A Zodiac rescue boat, dive unit and specialized tactical rescue team were dispatched to the quarry, as well as crews from the Franklin Fire Station. Zagranichny, who was driving alone, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:56 p.m. by medical personnel, authorities reported. Twenty Baltimore area youths were among the 350 participants from around the globe who traveled to Israel recently for a special seminar as part of the yearlong Diller Teen Fellowship, an immersive leadership program. The seminar took place from July 4-24. This year’s participants came from 16 communities in six countries, including Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia. Boston, central New Jersey, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Montreal, Melbourne, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires and the United Kingdom. Each community has an Israeli partner community.
